My Daddy, Joseph Flipper Wells, Sr. aka “Flip”, aka “Grandpop” aka “Uncle Joe”, was an amazing Man of God, devoted husband, loving father, caring uncle and brother-in-law, exemplary Postal Tour Superintendent, proud Veteran and great friend.
He was faithfully married to my mother Helen Wells for 58 wonderful years “until death they did part”. Two days before he transitioned while in the hospital, he reminded me of how much he loved Mommy and knew she was his wife the day he met her😍.
From the time he was an adult until her death, he affectionately cared for his mother who was an AME Assistant Pastor. His father was also a Pastor which is where he learned to love and accept Jesus at an early age.😇
Daddy proudly served his country in the Army🪖 and Navy⚓. He also fondly spoke of working with the Tuskegee Airmen✈. Before joining the US Postal Service, he worked at Sparrows Point. While at the Post Office✉, he worked his way up from being a mail carrier📬 to Mr. Wells, “Tour Superintendent” 👨‍💼which was a very prestigious position for a man of color during the 1970’s. He always led by example and made sure that he graduated from college 🧑‍🎓 in his later adult years and encouraged us to do the same.
Daddy adored his four children and made sure we were abundantly provided for spirit, soul and body. Going to church💒 was not an option in our house…it was a requirement. He definitely didn’t spare the rod with us and we were the better for it😁. He also made sure we were financially💰 literate by making us read books 📚and the stock market page 📈to him every day after school.
Daddy cherished spending time with his 30+ grandchildren and great grandchildren. They were truly his pride and joy. 🥰
Before his illness, he loved gardening🥬🫑🍅🍎🍉 in Warsaw, VA, going fishing🐟, going see the Orioles⚾️ at the stadium, watching the Ravens play🏈, singing on the Male Choir 🗣,as well as, serving the community with food🥫 give a ways.
I guess you can tell, I was truly a “Daddy’s Girl”👨‍👧 and always will be. I miss him tremendously😌.
Matthew 25:21 exemplifies my Daddy, “His lord said unto him, Well done, thou good and faithful servant: thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy Lord.” Brenda ❤️
